What Are Youth Gear Restrictions?

Instead of regulating individual parts, the rules set a single number: the maximum rollout in metres. Your rollout is determined by three things — chainring size, sprocket size, and tyre width — so a 48T chainring with a 16T cog on a 25mm tyre can be perfectly legal while a 50T chainring with an 11T cog on a 28mm tyre is not. Why limits at all? A large gear multiplies the force in a crash: a rider pinned in a big gear can be pulled over at high speed with no way to bail out. British Cycling Rollout Limits by Age

For British Cycling-registered events, the current maximum road rollouts by category are:

KNWU and KBWB: Racing Across the Channel

UK riders often cross over to race in the Netherlands (KNWU) or Belgium (KBWB), and both federations run their own youth gear restrictions. The principle is identical — a maximum rollout per age category — but the numbers differ by federation, age group, and discipline, and they are not the same as British Cycling's.

How to Measure Your Rollout

The official method is simple and takes five minutes with a tape measure. Select the largest gear your drivetrain can produce — biggest chainring, smallest sprocket — because that's the combination commissaires will check against the limit.

Measure from a fixed point on the front tyre to the ground, roll the bike forward until that point crosses your start mark, then rotate the cranks exactly one full revolution and measure how far the front tyre has moved. What Happens If You're Over the Limit?

At a registered race you'll be gear-checked before the start. If your rollout exceeds the limit for your category, the fix is a smaller chainring or a larger smallest sprocket — or both — and that usually means a part you didn't pack.
